Since her death in custody on 16 September 2022, the Iranian authorities have carried out a bloody repression across the country through mass arrests of demonstrators and the blocking of the means of communication, internet and social networks. Within five months, according to the Tehran Province Journalists Assocation (TPJA), an IFJ affiliate in Iran, at least 100 journalists have been arrested and detained in the country's jails.
In recent weeks, fewer than 10 detained journalists have been released on bail pending trial, but at least 20 journalists are still in prison and the hunt for journalists continues. Four women are among those arrested since the beginning of 2023, including Elnaz Mohammadi, arrested after a summoned to Evin prison court in Tehran, and Melika Hashemi, Mehrnoush Zarei and Saeedeh Shafiei who were arrested on 21 and 22 January.
While the arrests continue, the sentences are raining down on those on trial, with extremely heavy penalties ranging from one year to 18 years in prison. For example, sports journalist Ehsan Pirbornash was sentenced to 18 years in prison for "inciting war and bloodshed", "insulting sanctities", "computer crimes", and "propaganda against the regime". Other prison sentences include community service, lashes, exit bans and bans on working as a journalist.
These iniquitous judgements come at a time of great concern as the Iranian authorities have issued death sentences and started executing citizens and protesters arrested since the beginning of the movement.
As the Islamic Republic celebrates its 44th anniversary, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) recalls that at least 1,000 journalists and citizen-journalists have been arrested, detained, murdered, disappeared or executed since 1979. The IFJ urges the Iranian authorities to release all imprisoned journalists and media workers and to restore the free flow of information in the country.
IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said: " We remind the Iranian authorities of their international obligations towards human rights and freedom of speech. We call for the respect of democratic principles in the country and demand the immediate release of all our colleagues in jail."
Journalist Elnaz Mohammadi was released on 12 February on bail, while her sister Elahe Mohammadi remains in prison.

3- Mr Masoud Kordpur, editor-in-chief at Mukrian news agency, was arrested on 22 September on the street of Bukan city.

7- Mrs Maliheh Daraki, a freelance photojournalist in Shiraz city, was arrested on 26 October while covering a protest in Abadan city.
8- Mrs Farzaneh Yahya Abadi, a local freelance journalist in Abadan city, was arrested at her workplace on 19 October.
9- Mrs Farkhondeh Ashoori, a Freelance journalist and former reporter at Fars news agency, was arrested on 17 October in Shiraz city.

12- Mrs Maral Dar Afarin, a local journalist in Gilan province, was arrested on the first of November.
13- Mrs Melika Hashemi, a freelance journalist, was arrested on 21 January after being summoned to court.

17- Mr Khosro Sadeghi Borojeni, a freelance journalist who was detained on 22 July 2020, is serving a five-year jail term.
18- Mr Morteza Haghbaian, a freelance journalist who was arrested on 19 May 2022, has been sentenced to a two-year and six months jail sentence.
