Alert: Journalist killed in Khairpur by unknown actors

On August 7, journalist Ghulam Asghar Khand was shot to death by unknown actors while travelling from a press club to his residence in Khairpur. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) call for an immediate and thorough investigation into his killing.

Press Club Khairpur members hold a demonstration demanding justice for slain journalist Ghulam Asghar Khand on August 8, 2023.

Ghulam Asghar Khand, associated with the Sindhi Daily Sobh, was reportedly attacked and killed near the northern Sindh city of Khairpur. Unknown men riding motorcycles approached the journalist while he was at his guest house in the locality of Ahmadpur, before firing at him. The journalist received at least nine gunshot wounds during the attack. Khand was taken to Pir Jo Goth Taluka Hospital. The journalist died before receiving medical care.

Some reports indicate that Khand had reported on illicit activities in the area before his death. While local police are investigating the incident, no First Information Report has been filed relating to the case.

The IFJ and the PFUJ are currently investigating the incident.

PFUJ President GM Jamali and Secretary General Rana Muhammad Azeem said: “We demand the Provincial Government of Sindh and IG Police Sindh to immediately arrest killers and give compensation to the family of the killed journalist, Ghulam Asghar.”

The IFJ said: “Journalists and media workers in Pakistan face undue killings each year, with investigations often marred with delays and impunity. The IFJ calls for a swift and thorough investigation into the death of Ghulam Asghar Khand.”
