26 February: International Day for Palestinian Journalists

Four months since the start of the war in Gaza, Palestine, on 7 October, 100 journalists have been killed. This massacre has been as horrific as it is unprecedented. Join the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) and its affiliates on 26 February for an International Day in support of Palestinian Journalists.

As the war in Gaza approaches its fifth month, the IFJ, the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) and many affiliates around the world are mobilising through public actions to support journalists and media workers in Palestine, notably its members of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS).

One hundred journalists were killed in four months, the equivalent of seven  per week. This massacre is a terrible and unjustified tragedy.

The needs of our colleagues working in Gaza have become critical. In the middle of winter, our sisters and brothers and their families lack everything and especially the essentials: clothes, blankets, tents, food, water... The scarcity of these basic necessities in this small territory of 40 km long and 5 km wide, that is subject to a blockade,  results in a surge in prices. Basic goods, where they are available, are no longer affordable.

The IFJ is also alarmed by the poor international coverage of the conflict, resulting from the world media’s exclusion from the enclave by Israel. All over the world we deserve to know what is going on in Gaza. This deliberate denial of the right to report is an abuse of media freedom. In consultation with the PJS, we invite you to mobilise the members of your union, journalists in editorial offices, but also national organisations of workers on Monday 26 February, for what will be the International Day for Palestinian Journalists.

  • Download the campaign visual (in English, Spanish and French) and the announcement here
  • Suggestions for activities to mark the day: Rallies, speeches, public meetings, social media threads, all opportunities are necessary to remind all citizens that the freedom to inform has a price, in Gaza more than elsewhere. Let us never forget that for four months, it has been journalists from Gaza who have been reporting to the world because these few square kilometres have been completely closed.
  • Join us for a minute of silence at noon on 26 February to commemorate journalists killed since 7 October
