Statement from the Somali Journalists Network (SOJON)
The Somali Journalists Network (SOJON) has the pleasure to express and share solidarity with our colleagues to mark May 3rd celebrations for World Press Freedom Day.
A ceremony was held at SOJON center in Mogadishu, Somalia, for the World Press Freedom Day, to which attended Journalists, Civil Society representatives, Human Rights Groups and Law Society. The participants were presented with reports on journalists killed in Iraq and Somalia Journalists killed, harassed and detained. Some of the victims participated in the meeting.
The SOJON acting Director General Mr. Abdulrashid Abdulle Abikar (Deyl) has expressed his concern towards Somali Journalists working in difficult conditions, facing harassment and prison threats. He called on the authorities to respect the rights of the journalists and let them work freely.
“SOJON will not tolerate anyone violating, and harassing the journalist” said Mr. Deyl.
However, SOJON information office presented a list of 31 cases of press freedom violations throughout Somalia such as: Somaliland, Puntland and Southern Somalia.
We are very grateful to share with the International Journalists and our colleagues the World Press Freedom Day marked on May 3rd and hope to reach next year in a spirit of solidarity, safety and justice.
