Switzerland: IFJ Gender Council supports feminist strike

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) 's Gender Council (GC) supports the feminist strike scheduled on 14 June in Switzerland and in which its affiliates, Impressum, the Syndicat des médias et de la communication (Syndicom) and the Schweizer Syndikat Medienschaffender (SSM) are involved.

The industrial action is aimed at curbing inequalities between men and women workers, including concrete demands for the media with the slogan "No women, no news".

The GC is concerned about the decline of women's rights across the world. "We must support the feminist strike in Switzerland, which calls for closing the gender pay gap and taking concrete steps to put an end to sexism, racism and commit to reconcile work and family life."

The President of the Council, María Ángeles Samperio, said: "Without equality between men and women, there can be no justice or democracy. This also applies to the situation of women journalists, who all too often still work in more precarious conditions than men. We need to change this dynamic, not only to strengthen equality in the newsrooms but also to offer a more inclusive media discourse in favour of women and free of racism".

The IFJ backs the mobilization in Switzerland and encourages all its affiliates to stand for equality in the profession and in society.
