Finnish union successfully lobbies for change in unemployment law
Since 2013 freelance journalists in Finland enjoy better
legal status in case of unemployment. The law now recognises them as freelance
journalists and not as entrepreneurs thus permitting access to unemployment
benefits. The legislative change came about thanks to successful, constant
lobbying of the Union of Journalists in Finland (UFJ). Additionally, freelance journalists now do
not have to wait for months to be able to receive unemployment benefits.
The amendments will benefit especially immigrant
journalists who often work as freelancers due to the language barrier but could
not fall back onto the safety net provided to their Finnish counterparts.
