Palestine: journalists crave routine, home and family

As the death toll among Gaza’s journalists climbs, media workers from the enclave have spoken about their dreams of a return to life without bullets, bombs, and brutality. In a video, recorded by the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS) and published by the IFJ, journalists speak of their dreams of returning home, being with family, and visiting friends.

Shurouk Shaheen, of Syria tv misses her own bed and gathering with family for a meal, for example. Ibrahim Kanan of Al Ghad tv has seen his children only three times in the past 100 days and each time only for a few minutes.

Amrou Tabash, of Al Kofiya tv yearns to see his mother, with whom he has spent only half an hour in the past three months.  Hatweem Ar Rawagh, of the Sawa News Agency simply hopes to find out who has survived and who has not, and to have the chance to visit the graves of those who he has lost.

Jabr Abu Kameel, of the Ma’an News Agency’s home was destroyed. He says: “I long to sit down and relax for just an hour.

The journalists, who all work in helmets and blast vests, and have shifted their living quarters from tent to tent as the war has progresses paint a picture of resolve and steadfastness despite the terrible backdrop to their work.

IFJ general secretary Anthony Bellanger says: This film cast an unsparing light on the human cost to journalists of this conflict, and the war of attrition being waged against them. Despite their extraordinary feats of bravery, they hope for the simplest of human comforts – family, home and security. After four months as the world’s eyes and ears, our duty now is to ensure that Gaza’s journalists can return to normal life as soon as possible”.

Working with the PJS, the IFJ has supplied battery packs, first aid kits, tents, warm clothing a food to Gaza’s journalists. More help is still desperately needed, however. You can help either by bank transfer, or via an online donation portal.
