5. New Media and Globalisation

The 24th Congress of the IFJ, meeting in Seoul from June 11-16th 2001,
recognising that the conditions of increasing globalisation in media make it necessary for the countries in transition to establish methods for dealing with new commercial pressures in media,
believing that the priority is to provide for openness and diversity of views while supporting the development of an advertising market,
condemns the impact of globalisation in media that is leading to unacceptable levels of commercial pressure and is limiting the capacity to protect democratic values and national cultural interests, and is undermining the capacity of media to provide pluralist and professional information.
