20. Murder of Serbian journalist Proposed: Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia The 24th IFJ Congress, meeting in Seoul on June 11th to June 15th, 2001 Condemns the brutal murder of Serbian journalist, Milan Pantic, reporter of Belgrade daily “Vecernje Novosti” on June 11th, who worked in Central Serbia. The Congress notes that while independent media had a most important role in changing of former Milosevic’s dictatorship, journalists continue to face danger and threats from organised crimes as in the last 10 years. The murder of journalist Milan Pantic is a test for new authorities in Serbia and Yugoslavia in their commitment to stop violence against media and journalists. It is recalled that two years had passed since the murder of Serbian journalist and owner of daily “Dnevni Telegraf”, Slavko Curuvija. To this date, the new government did not find nor punish his killer even though they promised this in their pre-election campaign. The Congress insists that the authorities reinforce their efforts to find the killers of the Serbian journalists and bring them to justice.
