Pakistan: IFJ holds a training on safety of women journalists and gender equality

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), arranged a two-day Gender Equality & Safety Training workshop for members of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) and all factions of Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJs) in Karachi, on 25 and 26 November 2021.

Around 19 members of KPC and KUJ took part in this two-day training workshop in Karachi, which aimed to enhance the capability of women journalists regarding gender equality and the safety at their workplace. 

 

The event raised awareness of assistants about journalists' rights, gender equality issues, safety concerns of journalists when reporting in the field.

Participants and trainers discussed how to break the glass ceiling, secure salary increases and promotions, end harassment at the workplace and the importance for unions and media organizations to include women in their decision-making positions.

The president of the KPC, Fazil Jamily, and KPC's Secretary Rizwan Bhatti attended the closing ceremony, where they addressed the issue of gender-equality policy for all its members and encouraged women journalists to get involved in the trainings organized by KPC allover year. 

IFJ coordinator in Pakistan, Ghulam Mustafa highlighted the IFJ's ongoing projects in Pakistan to improve journalists' working conditions. The IFJ has relaunched its projects in Pakistan, where it has successfully completed some projects, including:

  •  A review of labour laws of Pakistan
  • Digital research projects to modernise Pakistani media landscape
  • Women's media mentoring projects with four different media development sector organizations in Pakistan to enhance journalists' labor rights.
  • Gender equality and safety trainings for women journalists
