The IFJ has welcomed a call by the United States National Writers Union to enhance protection for, and end discrimination against, women journalists around the world.
The NWU passed a resolution calling for global protection for women journalists at its conference earlier this month .
The Resolution, Global Call for Action to End Worldwide Discrimination and Abuse Against Women Journalists, which was passed unanimously, underlines the worsening situation for women journalists at work. It stresses that “at least 1 in every 2 journalists have suffered sexual harassment, psychological abuse, online trolling and other forms of human rights abuses”.
As an active supporter of the International Trades Unions Confederation (ITUC) Campaign to Stop Gender-Based Violence at Work, the Resolution also resolved to:
- fully support the campaign for an ILO Convention on gender-based violence at work
- fight against the gender pay gap
- tackle discrimination and precarious working conditions faced by women journalists worldwide.
IFJ Gender Council co-chair Mindy Ran said:
“We recognize and appreciate the resolution’s strong support for our Santander Declaration developed at the IFJ Gender Counsel Meetings in Spain, 25-26 May, 2018 and the commitment of the NWU to be at the forefront of the campaign to end violence against women journalists. “Strengthening solidarity among international unions and organizations will help build a powerful force to end gender-based violence across the globe”.
