Senior representatives of Russian and Ukrainian journalists’ unions have agreed a new plan of action aimed at tackling threats to journalists and promoting safety and professionalism for media working in and around Ukraine.
The agreement was reached during a meeting hosted by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović in Vienna on Monday.
The representatives of the Ukrainian Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine (IMTUU) and National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), and the Russian Union of Journalists (RUJ) agreed, among other things, to:
- urgently address the issues of journalists’ rights in Crimea and participate in a joint fact-finding mission there;
- work towards a joint conference on journalists’ safety and ethics in times of conflict;
- expand joint programmes for young journalists from both countries;
- co-operate on safety and professional standards in conflict reporting.
The journalist unions called on the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media to visit both countries and seek wider support and consensus on steps to preserve media freedom.
