Police attack journalist in Sindh, Pakistan
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) condemn the attack on journalists outside the Sindh High Court on Saturday May 23.
Masked commandos of the Special Security Unit of the Sindh Police attacked a number of journalists who were at the court to cover the former provincial home minister’s appearance at the registrar’s office.
Following the incident, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qain Ali Shah appointed DIG Dr Ameer Shaikh to investigate, a decision that is welcomed by the IFJ and PFUJ.
The PFUJ said: "It is an irony that media men are manhandled brutally in a democratic government that claims to be the best friend of the media. Footage of the incidence is available and one can easily recognized the people involved in this brawl. The government should arrest them and take them to the court of law."
The IFJ and the PFUJ urge the Sindh government to take appropriate steps to ensure that the case is properly investigated and perpetrators punished.
The IFJ Asia Pacific said: “The IFJ is concerned such incidents where journalists are attacked by those who should be protecting them. Media workers should never be attacked for doing their job.”
