Iran: IFJ launches new Persian website

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today launched a new section in Persian in its Middle East website featuring news and reports on the situation facing Iranian journalists and promoting ethical journalism, independent reporting and journalists’ labour rights. The website, which is a joint effort between the IFJ and its affiliate in Iran, the Association of Iranian Journalists (AoIJ), aims at connecting Persian-speaking journalists with the international community of media workers in order to build greater professional solidarity and empower them to deliver quality independent journalism. “We welcome the support of all Iranian journalists and look forward to them interacting with this website, to send and receive news concerning press freedom and promoting independent journalism,” said the AoIJ President, Rajabali Mazrooei. In addition to monitoring press freedom and journalists’ labour rights in the country, the website will provide information in Persian on IFJ activities, reports and campaigns of interest to Iranian journalists. “Iranian journalists at large have demonstrated their professionalism, resilience and independence in the frontline of the global fight for the future of journalism, despite the illegal closure of the AoIJ offices by the authorities 8 years ago,” said IFJ President, Philippe Leruth, in a solidarity letter sent to the AoIJ. “We are happy to launch this Persian section to hear your voice and talk to you in your own language, which is the least we can do in recognition of your work and in solidarity with your struggle.” Since the closure of the office of the AoIJ in 2009, the IFJ has repeatedly called on the Iranian authorities to hounor its international committments as well as abide by national laws that guarantee the right of workers to have a union of their choice represent them and defend their interests.
