IFJ urges the European Parliament to help end attacks on Palestinian journalists
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will call on the European Parliament to act to help halt attacks on- and jailing of - Palestinian journalists at a meeting in Brussels next Monday, 19 February.
Representatives of the IFJ, its affiliate the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate (PJS) and the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) will join diplomats and members of the European Parliament in calling for action after a new PJS report showed a huge rise in the number of violations of journalists’ rights last year.
In its report, the PJS denounced 909 media violations in 2017, an increase of 33% on 2016. In addition, 8 offices of three media companies and two radio stations were forced to close down by military orders. 29 journalists remain in Israeli jails, including five waiting to be sentenced and six in administrative detention. Facebook closed 158 Palestinian accounts on Israeli request.
During the meeting, the PJS will present additional findings of their monitoring of attacks by the Israeli forces on Palestinian journalists and violations of their right to report.
The meeting will be chaired by the MEP Neoklis Sylikitotis, who is also Chair of the Delegation for relations with Palestine within the European Parliament.
The speakers will be the PJS President, Nasser Abu Bakar, broadcast journalist and member of the PJS Board, formerly in administrative detention Omar Nazzal, IFJ Senior Vice President Younes M’Jahed, MEP Marie-Christine Vergiat and IFJ Deputy General Secretary Jeremy Dear, among others.
