Greece: IFJ board meets Greek President to discuss press freedom

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Executive Committee members met with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on 20 April to express their concerns over the state of press freedom and journalists' precarious conditions around the world.

A delegation of the IFJ Executive Committee, led by its President Dominique Pradalié, was received by President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, during executive committee meetings held in Athens and hosted by their affiliates JUADN.

The meeting addressed core issues such as the state of press freedom and precarious situation of journalists ­in Greece and killings of journalists around the world as well as the assassination of Greek journalist Giorgos Karaivaz and the state of impunity for the killing of journalists.

During the meeting, President Katerina Sakellaropoulou underlined the importance of free and independent press as a pillar of democracy and spoke of the "necessity that we all defend the independence of information, press freedom and the safety of journalists. At the same time, journalists themselves should ensure that, during the exercise of their duties, journalists follow the code of ethics, thus guaranteeing the citizens' right to unbiased information". 

The IFJ delegation was composed of Dominique Pradalie, IFJ President- Syndicat National des Journalists, France; Zuliana Lainez, IFJ Senior Vice President - Asociación Nacional de Periodistas del Perú; Sabina Inderjit, IFJ Vice President, Indian Journalists' Union; Jim Boumelha, Honorary IFJ Treasurer NUJ, UK & Ireland; Anthony Bellanger, IFJ Secretary General and IFJ Advisers Jennifer Moreau of Unifor – Canada; Adam Portelli of MEAA – Australia; Larry Goldbetter of NWU – United States of America; and Omar Faruk Osman of the National Union of Somali Journalists – NUSOJ; Maja Sever, EFJ President, JUADN President Maria Antoniadou; PEPU President Themis Beredimas; PFJU President Sotiris Triantafillou and the Secretary of the JUADN Cultural Foundation Fani Petralia.
