The Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) Steering Committee meeting in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, from 24- 26 January, 2015 held deliberations on Monday, aimed at solving the current leadership crisis affecting its regional affiliate, the Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA).
Two mediation teams were mandated to engage both parties and to report back to the Steering Committee. Members of the FAJ Steering Committee noted the complexity of the situation, and resolved to come up with a solution acceptable to both parties and in the interest of all the unions and the associations in the region.
The FAJ Steering Committee after very intensive deliberations decided to suspend the two existing “executive committees” and to put in place an interim committee that has been mandated to organize an Extraordinary General Meeting which will be held in Kigali, in April 2015, under the supervision of the FAJ. The interim committee comprises Maria Luisa de Carvalho Rogerio, (Chairperson) Vice President of FAJ, Credo Tetteh steering committee member of FAJ, Eric Oduor, Secretary General of Kenya Union of Journalists, Al Sadig Al Rasagi President of the Sudanese Journalists Union, and Gaspard Safari, Former President of Rwanda Journalists Association.
The Extraordinary General Meeting will bring together all the affiliates of EAJA with the task to deliberate and elect a new executive to run the affairs of the association as stipulated by the EAJA constitution.
The FAJ Steering Committee in this regard called on all parties in the crisis to accept its decisions and to abide by the provisions that are outlined in organizing the Extraordinary General Meeting, and which are based on the EAJA Constitution.
