Other organizations apart from IFJ's affiliates send us their condolences regarding the Charlie Hebdo's attack

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), that represents more than 600 000 journalists in 134 countries, is receiving since last Wednesday a lot of messages from different organizations in order to back our French colleagues and to condemn the attack to the editorial offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, in which 12 people were shot dead. From the IFJ we would like to thank you all for your kind words. You can find some of these messages below. European Transport Workers’ Federation On behalf of more than 3.5 million transport workers from 41 European countries and over 230 trade unions, I want to express solidarity with all journalists in Europe and the world following the barbaric attack on Charlie Hebdo in Paris on 7 January. Our first thoughts and deepest sympathy go to the families, friends and colleagues of the people who died or got injured in this brutal attempt to muzzle one of the strongest critical voices in French media. Pursuing a climate in which people have the liberty to fearlessly express their opinions in a peaceful manner will continue to be one of the key principles of the trade union movement. We therefore welcome the unity with which people around the world show their solidarity and determination not to allow a marginal group of extremists to undermine one of the core values of democracy, the freedom of speech, and spread fear and division in our societies.  Eduardo Chagas, ETF General Secretary International Federation of Translators

-- The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) is horrified by the attack that resulted in a dozen deaths and many wounded at the headquarters of the French weekly Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday. It condemns a despicable attack against freedom of expression, targeting in particular four well-known cartoonists, symbols of tolerance. "The year 2015 unfortunately is beginning on the same upward slope of violence that characterized 2014, with indiscriminate attacks against civilians, including journalists. The motivation behind this is to be found in a Middle East transformed into a powder keg by regional rivalries and foreign interventions," declared the PEC Secretary-General Blaise Lempen. The PEC expresses its most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the personnel of Charlie Hebdo. It stands in solidarity with other journalist associations, with the media and with French government in defending freedom of information, faced with a regression to barbarity. Japan broadcasting labour union NIPPORO (Japan broadcasting labour Union) are profoundly saddened by attack on media. We would like to extend our deep condolences to colleagues who were killed by this attack, and their families and friends. We believe this is an alarm for the freedom of expression. We definitely need to defend the public role of media in the society, so that we strongly condemn this brutal attack and express our solidarity with media personnel in French and all over the world. We will continue to act aggressively for the freedom of speech with IFJ and UNI as a member."
