The 39-year-old journalist, who worked for Radio Urundey FM, was shot by people on a motorbike as he was driving his vehicle through the streets of the department of Amambay, in the city of Pedro Juan Caballero.
In a statement, the Union of Journalists of Paraguay said that Álvarez was the ninth press worker to be murdered in the Department of Amambay and described him as a person very much loved by colleagues in the area.
