Mexico: reporter executed in Tamaulipas

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), representing 600 000 journalists around the world, condemns the murder of Zamira Esther Bautista, killed by gunmen on 20 June. His murder marks the sixth journalist silenced in Mexico for the exercise of their profession during 2016.

IFJ President Philippe Leruth said: “It is essential the authorities carry out an immediate investigation of this crime and all the killings and disappearances of journalists and human rights activists in Mexico. In a country where the level of impunity remains above 98%, the resolution of these cases is essential to end the culture of protection to the perpetrators of crimes and persecution of journalists and other members of civil society”.
