The
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) in expressing its deep
concern over reports that a journalist was murdered in Nepal on April 1.
The IFJ has received
reports that the journalist has been identified as Yadav Poudel, 40, a
Jhapa district correspondent of the capital-based Avenues Television and Rajdhani Daily, a national broad sheet.
Poudel
had also been working as a sub-editor for the local Mechi Times, and was the former secretary of the Jhapa Press Union.
Poudel
was reportedly fatally stabbed by an unidentified group of men in the eastern
Nepal district of Jhapa, at a hotel in the Birtamod Bus Park.
According
to police, a number of people have been detained in connection with the matter.
Police
also announced that they are investigating the case to discern the motives
behind the attack.
Meanwhile,
an emergency meeting of FNJ is underway in Kathmandufollowing the incident.
FNJ
Chairman Shiva Gaule condemned the killing and said that a media mission team
would be sent to Jhapa to investigate the situation.
