The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), representing 600 000 journalists around the world, has voiced its concern over a series of decisions by the Argentinian government to suspend the international broadcasters Russia Today and Telesur from airing on Open Digital Television (TDA) in the country.
“With newspapers being starved of advertising revenue, journalists sacked, pressure being put on media to follow the government’s line and current affairs programmes being taken off air this latest move is a further example of the deteriorating climate for freedom of expression in Argentina,” said IFJ president Philippe Leruth. “The government must act to ensure plurality of voices which are crucial in democratic societies."
