The IFJ and its affiliates from East to West, from North to South

IFJ affiliates around the world have taken key actions in support of media workers amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

IN EUROPE, the European Commission will release an emergency fund of 750 billion euros by the end of the year.  Brussels has indicated that the 27 national ministries of Culture and Communication have been assured of receiving their share. The balance of power has titled to the national level and some of our affiliates are already in discussion with the appropriate authorities.

In detail, the news in the United Kingdom, in France, North Macedonia, Finland, Ukraine, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, NorwayGermany, Belgium, Croatia… Most of the measures taken at national level are updated regularly by the European Federation of Journalists and are available HERE.

IN AFRICA, discussions are also progressing, although this remains difficult. The Federation of African journalists (FAJ) released a major study on June 15 on the situation of journalists and the media on the continent. A webinar of the FAJ and the IFJ, bringing together around forty participants on June 16, allowed us to better understand the difficulties of each of our affiliates. Some, such as Kenya, Somalia, Mozambique have launched concrete actions in support of journalists. But in the majority of African countries, so much remains to be done while everything remains to be done as in  Zimbabwe, Uganda...

IN NORTH AMERICA, IFJ affiliates were quick in writing and proposing at the very beginning solid national recovery plans, even if sometimes discussions were tense or difficult. This is particularly the case in the United States and Canada.

IN LATIN AMERICA, FEPALC, the Federación de Periodistas de América Latina y el Caribe, also organised a webinar to take stock on the damage caused by the global crisis on the continent, but also to assess the worrying setbacks in the area of freedom of expression, particularly in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia,Chile, Paraguay

IN ASIA-PACIFIC, several online meetings have also taken place, noting that the gap is still as great between the countries of Oceania, Australia et la New Zealand and other countries like India, Myanmar, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Mongolia

IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND IN THE ARAB WORLD, the IFJ published a report on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, which shows how the region remains an area always complicated for journalists. Special focus on Iraqi Kurdistan, Morocco, Iraq, Egypt, Algeria, Iran
