IFJ Launches World Press Freedom Day Activities with Unveiling of Congress Film Trailer

To mark the approach of World Press Freedom Day and its upcoming World Congress in Dublin, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has created a short film to show its commitment to press freedom and global unity among journalists.

The film, which highlights the theme of this year’s Congress, ‘Leading the Global Fightback,’ expresses the IFJ’s determination to fight back against  precarious work, violence and unethical practices in journalism, and its strength based on the unity and solidarity of over 600,000 members of IFJ affiliates.

This vibrant film, featuring people speaking languages from across the world expresses the IFJ’s commitment to tackling the issues affecting the freedoms and rights of journalists,” said IFJ General Secretary Jim Beth Costa. “It is a great way to begin the build-up to the World Congress in Dublin from 4-7June 2013.

“As World Press Freedom Day approaches, on Friday 3 May 2013, it also conveys the IFJ’s drive to defend freedom of expression and the media and to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold these rights.”

The IFJ theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day is ‘The Safety and Imprisonment of Journalist Around the World.’ This reflects the on-going concern over the numbers of our colleagues who continue to languish in prisons in many countries as a result of their profession.
