IFJ responds to UN Consultation on impact of intellectual property regimes on the right to science and culture

The IFJ has responded to a public consultation launched by the UN special rapporteur in the field of cultural rights under the theme “The impact of intellectual property regimes on the right to science and culture”.

In its response the IFJ said that the right of people to enjoy and access cultural heritage without discrimination was a core element of any democratic society and formed an integral part of international human rights laws. 

As authors of literary and artistic works, both in print and audio-visual, journalists also need to access cultural heritage.

The IFJ stressed however that a fair balance should be put in place to  concililiate the protection of authors’ rights and the “right of people to enjoy and access cultural heritage”.
