A journalist with the Public App platform and City News, Mahto was shot from close range near his home by four unidentified assailants who then fled the scene. The journalist was taken to a local government health centre for treatment but was declared deceased on arrival. The local journalist and general secretary of Begusarai District Journalists Association, Saurabh Kumar, said that Mahto’s reporting on various mafia organisations was linked to his murder.
