NUJP releases guidelines for safe election coverage

Media Release: Philippines

May 13, 2013

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) congratulates the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines on its release on May 10, of a set of guidelines to aid fellow journalists in covering safely the 2013 midterm elections.

The guidelines provide reporters, photojournalists, and other media personnel with a sense of what to expect when covering elections and how to prevent and respond to threats and unsafe incidents.

Included in the guidelines are tips on what to bring and what to wear in the field, and what to do when caught in gunfire or hostile situations. Some tips also stress the need for journalists to know their rights, as well as to practice fair and balanced reporting as a tool to keep them out of harm's way.

This information has also been turned into an easily accessible infographic. The Media Safety Office encourages journalists to download and share the guidelines with colleagues in the media.

The guidelines have been produced under IFJ/NUJP Media Freedom and Safety in the Philippines Project funded by the Open Society Institute and International Media Support.
