Nepali Journalist Attacked

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joints its affiliate the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) in calling for the authorities of Nepal to act swiftly against political functionaries of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (NCP-M), who brutally beat up and injured Nabin Rijal, a former vice-president of the FNJ’s Dailekh district chapter in the mid-western region on August 25.

 

According to reports received from the FNJ, Rijal was attacked by a group of party workers led by local NCP-M leader Ajit Chand, late on the evening of 25 August 2012. He suffered serious injuries on the head and back as a result of the attack. Rijal reported that his attackers also threatened to kill him.

 

The FNJ reported that the appeared to be no clear motivation for the attack.

 

Attacks on media personnel are unacceptable. The IFJ calls on the authorities of Nepal to immediately file charges against Rijal’s assailants and ensure they are quickly dealt with under the law.
