The offices of Modus an Indonesian tabloid newspaper, based in Aceh in western Indonesia were attacked by a Molotov cocktail on Saturday, June 30, 2018. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) have condemned the attack. The attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, when the owner of a coffee kiosk out the front said he heard two loud explosions and saw flames. No one was injured in the attack, and the building only suffered minor damage. Misdarul Ihsan, chairperson of AJI’s Aceh brand denounced the incident as a terror attack on media workers. He said: “We asked the police to uncover the motive and conduct a thorough investigation.” The IFJ said: “We strongly condemn any attack on the media, especially those which attempt to intimidate and silence. Journalists should never fear for their safety while at work. Attacks such as these on the media weaken democracy. We stand with AJI in demanding a thorough investigation into the attack.”
