Former Tribune reporter under threat a year after his shooting

The International Federation of Journalists joins its affiliate the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines in expressing serious concern over the recent attack on reporter Fernan Angeles, exactly one year after his near fatal shooting at his Manila home.

In his statement 10 days after his shooting on March 11, 2012, Angeles said he believed the attack was an attempted assassination by EPD officers.

Yesterday, Angeles was ambushed by a group of armed assailants at his home.  Angeles, who now writes for InterAksyon.com, told the NUJP that he was warned that police from the Eastern Police District (EPD) were implicating him in a drug raid that took place in Mapayapa Compound in Pasig City yesterday.

Angeles said he believes those behind his shooting last year were again trying to kill him, making it appear linked to the drug bust.

About 14 hours before the ambush, he alerted the EPD chief that the gunman, a drug dealer, also had dealings with some members of the Pasig City police.

In a text message sent to NUJP early this morning, Angeles said he managed to sneak out of the area and found a safer place to stay.
