When the first cases of a novel pneumonia were reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, few could have imagined the mass consequences of a pandemic that has since claimed more than 2.2 million lives worldwide. This IFJ bulletin provides a glimpse at how Covid-19 has impacted press freedom and journalism in East Asia in that time. Combined with the effects of Hong Kong’s controversial national security legislation, it has been one of the toughest years for journalists in the region.
