IFJ Welcomes Launch of Survey on Women Journalists in the UAE

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today welcomed the launch of the Journalists' Association of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) national survey on women journalists' working conditions.

The survey of conditions in the UAE was announced at a regional workshop held in Abu Dhabi on October 8 and 9 that gathered thirty representatives from unions and association of journalists in the Gulf region to address gender stereotypes in the profession.

The survey was initiated in response to the increasing number of women leaving their jobs as journalists in the UAE.

"The survey will examine the reasons for women's departure and the means for bringing them back into the profession. We hope that it will strengthen women's links with the Association," said Mohamed Yosif, President of the Journalists' Association of the UAE.

The workshop was jointly organized by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Journalists' Association of the UAE.

"The launch of the survey on women journalists in the UAE will provide the necessary data for assessing gender gaps in the profession and for planning further actions," said Pamela Moriniere, IFJ gender programmes officer. This is excellent news for our gender campaign in the region."

Since the launch of the IFJ campaign on women partners in trade union leadership in Tunisia earlier this year, the IFJ has conducted a series of seminars on gender equality in Algeria, Iraq, Palestine and the UAE.
