Serge Alain Godong (Cameroon) is the winner for central and West Africa
The IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize giving ceremony for Central and West Africa took place on June 26, 2003 in Dakar, Senegal. Serge Alain Godong of the Cameroonian daily Mutations was awarded the prize for his article “The fight against poverty is a Heavenly affair” published on 18th December 2002;
Cherif Moumina SY ( Burkina Faso ) for his article “Ivority syndrome: Ivorian article 35, Burkinabe article 38” published in “Brendré”on 14th October, 2002 and Godefroid Ngambata ( DRC ) for his article “ Zimbabwe: More calls for a negotiated solution to the Zimbabwean crisis” published in : “ Le Potentiel” on the 19th September 2002, received the congratulations of the jury.
In the radio and television categories, Jacques Kalume M’VITA of Best Radio Kahuzi in Democratic Republic of Congo and Joseph O. Ogieriakhi of Nigerian Television Authority, of Benin City , Nigeria received “Special Mention” of encouragement of the jury.
The ceremony was preceded by a round table in presence of the Senegalese minister of communication. Journalists from the Media Organization of Central Africa(OMAC) and of the West African Journalists’ Association (WAJA) attended the round table to discuss the role the media should play in the consolidation of the young democracies and peace building in Africa.
The IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize is worth 1000 Euros and is meant to promote tolerance and to combat racism and discrimination. It is open to journalists in each of the five regions of the world.
