Newspaper Office Attacked in Nepal

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is disturbed to learn of an attack at the office of the Gatisheel daily and Image weekly in the district of Nuwakot in the Bagmati zone in north-central Nepal.

According to information from the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), an IFJ affiliate, the incident occurred on September 6, when a group of people led by a local leader arrived at the office, roughed up newspaper staff and damaged vital equipment.

The attack was reportedly in retaliation for the newspaper publishing a news item on the activities of the person who led the attack.

“The IFJ joins the FNJ in condemning this attack and calls upon the local authorities to bring to account those involved,” IFJ Asia-Pacific Director Jacqueline Park said.

“We urge all political parties and civil society actors in Nepal to honour the established mechanisms of grievance redressal in all matters connected with the media, such as the Nepal Press Council”.
