Delivered at the end of a protest rally, the FNJ memorandum was signed by the representatives of 20 different press freedom and human rights organisations.
Expressing deep concerns over the growing dangers and restraints for journalists in Pakistan Bishnu Nisthuri, FNJ president left the memorandum in the Embassy’s premises even though officials refused to accept it.
“Democracy and rule of law should be restored in Pakistan immediately,” said Nisthuri.
However, the safety of journalists working in Nepal remains a grave concern to the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
The IFJ is anxious for the future of Nepal’s own media independence after death threats were issued to two journalists on November 16.
Ram Kumar Elan, correspondent of Naya Patrika Daily and Girija Adhikari, publisher of Sama Weekly, received the threats via telephone.
President of the FNJ’s Makawanpur Chapter, Pratap Bista, reported that Elan and Adhikari were targeted after publishing news about possible breaches of customs regulations by officials.
“Regional solidarity is crucial at these times of crisis and the IFJ supports this action by the FNJ wholeheartedly,” said IFJ Asia Pacific Director Jacqueline Park. “These latest threats against Nepali journalists tell us that journalists’ safety is and must remain a priority across the region.”
The IFJ joins the FNJ in condemning the latest threats and urges the government to take strong action against the perpetrators and ensure protection for the two journalists involved.
