Initiatives in support of media and human rights in Africa

The IFJ has launched several initiatives to promote quality journalism and excellence in human rights reporting.

The Natali Prize for Journalism: Excellence in Reporting Human rights, Democracy and Development and the IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize, supported by the European Commission, are both open to print and on-line journalists from Africa.

In 2002 Raymond Archer, winner of the Natali Prize for Africa, scooped the Gold Medal Award for his three-piece report on a Swedish-Ghanaian deportation scam published in the daily Ghanaian Chronicle.

The IFJ also monitors closely attacks on press freedom in Africa and assists African journalists who are persecuted for their work.

  • Follow-up of press freedom issues and direct assistance to member unions in Africa
