Women Journalists Win Half the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards

Out of a total of 16 awards, women journalists from all over India bagged eight of the first Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards 2005-06 given away by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at a glittering ceremony in New Delhi on April 12, 2006.

Barkha Dutt, of NDTV 24x7 bagged the “Journalist of the Year” in the broadcast category for her “reports from Nagapattinam that captured the trauma and tragedy of lives torn apart by the Tsunami”.

Sutapa Deb, also from NDTV 24x7 received the “Regional Award - North East” (Broadcast) for a “report that ventured into the heart of unrest in Manipur and told the story of its victims”.

Freelance journalist Ratna Bharali Talukdar won the “Regional Award North East” (Print) for her “in-depth reports chronicling the lives and struggles of coal-mine workers in Upper Assam”.

Swati Thyagarajan, from NDTV 24x7 received the “Environmental Reporting” (Broadcast) for “a report on a Karnataka village trying to keep alive a tradition and storks who have made it their home”.

Freelance journalist C. Vanaja, won the award for “Uncovering India Invisible” (Print) for her “journey into the deep forests of the Dhandakaranya to report on the parallel government run by the Naxalites”.

Shikha Trivedy, from NDTV 24x7 received the “Uncovering India Invisible” (Broadcast) for her “journeys into the scarred Gujarat landscape, to discover a society struggling to come to terms with life after a carnage”.

Menaka Doshi from CNBC TV 18 won the award for “Business and Economic Journalism” (Broadcast) for “the most talked-about story of last year, the report which made the rift in the Ambani family official”.

Somini Sengupta from The New York Times won the “Foreign Correspondent Covering India” (Print) for “a wide range of stories from across India, right from the Naxal heartland to the ground zero of Japanese Encephalitis in UP”.
