IFJ Outraged by Magazine Office Attack in India

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) strongly condemns the attack on the offices of Outlook magazine in Mumbai, capital of Maharashtra state in India, by vigilantes of a local political party.

The intruders into the Outlook office claimed that they were offended by the unfavourable depiction of their leader in an issue the magazine brought out, commemorating 60 years of India's independence.

While details are still awaited, it seems the case that the local police did little to prevent this intrusion into the editorial offices of Outlook magazine.

"If all politicians were to be so sensitive about media criticism, then there would be little room left for ordinary citizens to comment on governance processes," said IFJ Asia-Pacific Director Jacqueline Park.

The IFJ, which represents over 600,000 journalists in 114 countries, calls upon the Indian government and the state government in Maharashtra, to bring to account those responsible for this most recent attack on the freedom of expression.
