IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize: Announcement of Finalists in South East Asia

The IFJ today announced the six finalists for the IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize in South East Asia.

The finalists have been chosen from the 128 entries submitted to the Prize in South East Asia and were judged by a well respected Jury from around the region. The South East Asia Jury members are:

Mr. K.P. Waran, chief news editor, The New Strait Times (Malaysia),
Ms. Georgina Encanto, professor, UP College of Mass Communication (Philippines),
Mr. Lor Chandara, senior reporter, The Cambodia Daily (Cambodia),
Mr. Dwi Setyo Irawanto, senior journalist, Alliance of Independent Journalists (Indonesia),
Mr. Sek Barisoth, journalism trainer, Cambodian Communication Institute (Cambodia).

Due to the limited number of entries for the television categories, the jury considered the TV and Radio entries as one category: Broadcast category.

    The winners of the Prize will be announced at the prize giving ceremony in Manila, the Philippines, on June 2004. The ceremony will be combined with a regional forum focusing on the aims of the Prize.

    The IFJ Journalism for Tolerance Prize, promoting tolerance, combating racism and discrimination, will be awarded to journalists in five regions of the world.

    In South East Asia, a total prize pool of €3,000 will be awarded for entries in two separate categories: print/on-line and broadcast.

    The Prize, supported by the European Union, has been launched at a time when cultural, religious and ethnic differences are increasingly contributing to instability and unrest in many regions of the world.
