IFJ Condemns Murder of Iraqi Journalist

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on the Iraqi authorities in the city of Mosul to launch an immediate investigation into the murder of journalist Hilal al Ahmadi who was gunned down yesterday morning outside his home.

"We condemn the shocking murder of our colleague and call for his killers to face justice," said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary. "This crime shows there is a still a long way to go to achieve safety of journalists in Iraq."

The Iraqi Journalist Syndicate (IJS) says two gunmen struck early morning, shooting dead Ahmadi, a father of four, as he was stepping out of his home on the way to work. The 50 year old journalist  wrote for several newspapers, including the Mosul Echo, Iraqiyoun, al Hadba', al Isalah al Jadid and al Sawt al Akhar and was well known for his critical views, says the IJS.

The IFJ backs calls by its Iraqi affiliate which asked security forces to step up the fight against violence targeting media and arrest Ahmadi's killers. The Federation says the murders of two journalists who were killed in Mosul city are still unresolved.

"The lack of credible action on violence against media sends a dangerous sign to media predators," added White. "It encourages further attacks and the Iraqi authorities need to end this culture of impunity."
