IFJ Calls for Justice on Fifth Anniversary of Ukrainian Journalist Gyorgy Gongadze

©Ukrainska PravdaFive years after the brutal assassination of the Ukrainian journalist, Georgy Gongadze, the IFJ says that the opportunity to finally solve the case provided by the political changes in Ukraine following the “Orange revolution” has been missed.

“We are still waiting for real justice,” says Aidan White, General Secretary of the IFJ. “Now is the time for the criminals behind this case to be taken in and we will continue to demand justice and a proper, independent and extensive enquiry until this has been done”.

The fifth anniversary of Gongadze’s death -- editor of the internet magazine Ukrainska Pravda who was murdered by unknown assailants and his headless body dumped in a wood near Kyiv in 2000 -- comes as an international commission supported by the IFJ, the Institute of Mass Information, the National Union of Journalists of the UK and Ireland and the Gongadze Foundation published a report this week claiming that the authorities continue to obstruct the investigation into the murder five years ago of journalist Gyorgy Gongadze.

“Gyorgy's brutal assassination symbolizes the global fight against impunity and the need to end targeting of journalists,” said White. “There will be no real democracy and no real change in the Ukraine until there is justice in this case.”
