The leader of Europe’s organised labour movement today gave his support to the protest of journalists warning that decent working conditions are essential to maintain media quality. In a statement of support for the Stand up for Journalism campaign John Monks, General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation said:
"When trade unions of journalists speak out so strongly, every one of us should be concerned about the threat to democracy we face. Decent jobs and protected working conditions are essential if we are to maintain standards of free expression, pluralism and ethical journalism."
