The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is appalled by news that only weeks after the Nepal 1 TV strike for better working conditions was resolved, eight Delhi-based employees have been forced to resign due to threats and pressure from television management.
According to the statement issued by the television's employees union on June 12, journalists Chranjivi Devkota, Rajendra Khanal, Divyajyoti Mishra, Lily Baidhya, Sushil Kharel, Pradip Giri, Madhu Bhattarai and Aarati KC, resigned after repeated threats and verbal attacks from management.
The union also stated that management had been indifferent to the 14 point agreement signed by the employees and the television management on May 7, to end a three-week strike by employees for a collective agreement and improved working conditions.
“This is shocking news that reflects terribly on the management of Nepal 1 TV,” IFJ Asia Pacific Director Jacqueline Park said.
“The IFJ calls on Nepal 1 television to launch an investigation into these threats and verbal attacks, to ensure bullying such as this no longer occurs in their workplace,” Park said.
According to the FNJ, the television’s employees union has warned that if management keeps on ignoring the agreement and fails to create a conducive environment for return of the eight journalists, they will hold another strike against management.
“The IFJ has been completely behind the Nepal 1 TV employees’ campaign for better working conditions, and urges management to immediately implement the signed agreement,” Park said.
