The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) urges all affiliates to support the Aliansi Jurnalis Independen’s Yogyakarta's emergency appeal for those injured or sustaining damage to their homes after a devastating earthquake on the island of Java, Indonesia on May 27.
The earthquake struck Indonesia’s south coast island Java, Yogyakarta and measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, higher than originally reported.
The official death toll has been recorded at more than 6000 and over 30,000 people were injured.
More than 13,000 houses were damaged with an estimated 200,000 people homeless.
IFJ affiliate, the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), has recorded 27 journalists injured, lost or sustaining major damage to their residences and these numbers are expected to increase.
“This is a terrible tragedy. The IFJ expresses its deep regret for all those involved,” said IFJ president Christopher Warren.

The IFJ supports the AJI’s call for support from international communities to help those suffering loss or financial damage so they can return to their professional duties in the media.
“The IFJ urges all communities and affiliates to support Indonesia in this desperate time of need,” said Warren.
The Australian Media Alliance has already pledged to donate funds to the appeal.
The appeal closes on June 30, 2006 and reports on distribution will be given to those who donated.
