The veteran contributor to The Guardian and other leadinginternational newspapers went missing in with his Brazilian guide Bruno Pereira in a remote area of the Amazone rainforest known for illegal mining, fishing, logging and trafficking, according to media reports. His remains were later found and confirmed by forensic experts to be his.

Two suspects were detained, including one who led the police to an area near the city of Atalaia do Norte in western Amazon state, where he said he had buried bodies. A third suspect surrendered to the police in connection with the killings.
