The EFJ has fiercely protested against the dismissals at the 'Mittelbayerische Zeitung' in Regensburg during their Annual General Meeting in Nuremberg on May 27, 2000. In a financially healthy publishing house, about 70 jobs are to be cut. Both central and local newsrooms are targets for outsourcing.
The publisher Peter Esser plans to buy articles and main editions from other papers, without consideration for the drop in quality.
The citizens of the city of Regensburg oppose this restriction of press freedom and quality reporting. The EFJ supports its colleagues as well as the German Journalists' Unions DJV and IG Medien in their fight against these measures that are solely taken to maximise profits.
