The International Federation of
Journalists (IFJ) joints its affiliate the Federation of Nepali Journalists
(FNJ) in calling for the authorities of Nepal to act swiftly against political
functionaries of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (NCP-M), who brutally beat
up and injured Nabin Rijal, a former vice-president of the FNJ’s Dailekh district
chapter in the mid-western region on August 25.
According to reports received
from the FNJ, Rijal was attacked by a group of party workers led by local NCP-M
leader Ajit Chand, late on the evening of 25 August 2012. He suffered serious
injuries on the head and back as a result of the attack. Rijal reported that
his attackers also threatened to kill him.
The FNJ reported that the
appeared to be no clear motivation for the attack.
Attacks on media personnel are unacceptable.
The IFJ calls on the authorities of Nepal to immediately file charges against
Rijal’s assailants and ensure they are quickly dealt with under the law.
