The Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) today has vigorously condemned the detention of a media professional in Zimbabwe. According to the FAJ affiliate the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) photojournalist Angela Jimu has been assaulted and detained by anti-riot police in Harare on August 20th. ''Authorities in Zimbabwe must immediately order the police to stop assaulting journalists and media professionals in the course of their job,'' said Mohamed Garba, FAJ President. Jimu, a photojournalist with the Zimbabwe Mail, was assaulted by police while covering a demonstration in Harare by opposition MDC-T youths. Police were yet to charge the photographer when ZUJ lawyers and officials sought for more information at the Harare Central Police Station, where Jimu was detained. ZUJ President Michael Chideme said that the Union was appalled by this harassment of journalists and would engage authorities to put an end to this. “We have persistently condemned any form of harassment of journalists as this compromises their safety,” said Chideme. “Such levels of intolerance and disrespect of the integrity of journalists and media practitioners is totally unacceptable.” Chideme added that it was unfortunate that several journalists had to scurry for cover during the melee.
