The International Federation of Journalists today announced the nominees for The 2003 Europe Prize: Journalism for a Changing World. The winner - who will receive a Europe Prize certificate and a financial award of EUR 8,000 - will be announced at a special prize-giving ceremony to be held on 05 February 2004 at the International Press Centre Résidence Palace in Brussels.

The 2003 Europe Prize - which is co-funded by the Network of European Foundations' European Drug Policy Fund - is awarded for outstanding reports, which focus on the social, economic and political impact of drug policy in Europe and thereby promote better understanding within civil society and media about existing drug control mechanisms and the important role that Europe plays in defining drug policy worldwide.

“With close to 60 entries from over 20 different countries drawn from some of Europe’s finest papers, the Europe Prize continues to raise the benchmark for journalistic standards across the globe,” said Aidan White, IFJ General Secretary.

The nominees are for The 2003 Europe Prize are:

Yulia Gayday (Ukraine) for her article "Infant Face of Drug Dependence" published in Evening News

Nick Davies (Great Britain) for his report "How Britain Lost the War against Drugs: The Problems of Prohibition" published in The Guardian

Wolfgang Metzner (Germany) for his story "Generation Hasch - Voll Grass" published in Stern

The shortlist was drawn up by an independent jury who met in Brussels on Tuesday 23 September 2003.
