Statement from the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ)
The National Union of Somali Journalists, NUSOJ, is today delighted to initiate a new website (www.nusoj.org) to monitor violations of freedom of press in Somalia. In addition, this website is dedicated to run campaigns against these violations and protect the principles of freedom of press.
The site also dishes up as an archive of press freedom violations in the country. Episodic Reports about these infringements are published in this website to depict clear picture of abuses occurring in Somalia plus the press freedom developments reached.
The NUSOJ website is working as a place where Somali journalists can obtain useful information concerning their day-to-day work such as the professional conduct of journalists. Besides from this service for local journalists, the international organizations have the chance to find from this site an up-to-date statements and reports.
NUSOJ is launching this website as part of its efforts to reach its goal, which is to defend and broaden the freedom of the Press, which is the freedom to gather information, the freedom to impart information and the freedom of opinion without meddling.
In the past three years, the Somali Journalists Network, SOJON, was monitoring, reporting and recording press freedom violation, but on account of change to the name SOJON to NUSOJ, the organization also changes its previous website (www.sojonsomalia.org) to this new website (www.nusoj.org).
The Somalia Alerts system that SOJON used to disseminate the statements and reports concerning press freedom is also changed to “Somalia Press Freedom Observer”, although the current mailing list remains the same.
